body art

i have been drawing lately...really i have, just haven't taken photos lately with all the gloomy overcast skies we've had here in southern cal. this drawing of lilly is far from complete but wanted to prove that i was hard at work!! i am entering her and hopefully megan, if i finish her in time for a competition thru the OCCCA called revisiting beauty. i chose to draw friends of my daughters who had multiple piercings on their face because it challenges me and my feelings of facial piercings.

throughout history, in other cultures piercings and tattoos have been a rite of passage. but now it's becoming extremely prevalent in our culture as another way for people to express themselves and to me, a way to challenge societies ability for acceptance and tolerance.

these things i believe are true: right or wrong people will always have snap judgments/opinions about appearances. and depending on their values/morals, decide whether piercings are acceptable to them or not.

i have to admit that I am a mother who constantly is restricting (to a degree) these sorts of things for my oldest daughter. why? it's not that i care in the least what people/society thinks about it, yet i know multiple facial piercings can change the way people treat you, and if an employer hires you or not. but beyond that, i am very challenged to see the beauty and creativity in it. maybe with time i will come around and be fascinated with piercings like i have with tattoos.

so how do you feel about body art?

This is lovely. I don't get offended by body art, but it does sometimes give me the heebie jeebies (to use a technical term!) I can't imagine what it must be like to have facial piercings.

That said, I love how you've captured the fierce expression of this person. The eyes have so much intensity!

Kelly that's the perfect word(s)! I love it! I get that too when there's just so many piercings!
